Rowena Crest Viewpoint: Overview
Without a doubt, the Rowena Crest Viewpoint is one of the best roadside viewpoints in the Columbia River Gorge.

Visitors can soak in expansive views of the Columbia River, pristine meadows, and dramatic cliffs the gorge is famous for.
You can spend anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours enjoying the views and hiking trails.

There is no cost to visit Rowena Crest Viewpoint, and it is open year-round, though springtime is a great time to visit because of the amazing wildflowers.
There are lots of parking spots, but this spot can get crowded, especially during the wildflower rush in Spring.
How to Get to Rowena Crest Viewpoint
The Rowena Crest Viewpoint is located along a section of the Historic Columbia River Highway (US-30), near The Dalles, Oregon and is technically part of Mayer State Park.
If you’re coming from Hood River, turn off of Highway 84 at exit 69 in Mosier. If you’re coming from The Dalles, take exit 74.

When to Visit Rowena Crest Viewpoint
Rowena Crest is open year-round; however, you may want to keep in mind the following considerations.
The weather in winter can be variable, with a mix of cold but sunny days and windy, rainy ones. Snow is also possible.

Spring is a great time to visit Rowena Crest. There are stunning wildflowers in April and May. In fact, we think this is the best time of year to visit.
Summer and fall are great as well. Whichever time of year you go, pack layers! The Columbia Gorge is windy.
Rowena Crest Viewpoint Parking
There are parking spots for about 200 cars at Rowena Crest Viewpoint.
That said, it does get crowded on nice weekends, especially when wildflowers are in bloom (more on that below).
When you arrive, you’ll see a small loop you can drive around. There isn’t a real parking lot. Instead, just park on the side of the loop.
On a crowded day, it might take a bit to find a spot, but you should have no trouble because people come and go frequently.
Wildflowers at Rowena Crest Viewpoint
During April and May, wildflowers are a main draw in the Columbia River Gorge. In fact, Rowena Crest is one of the best places to see wildflowers in the Columbia River Gorge!
You can see wildflowers just steps from your car, but if you’re up for a bit of walking, you can see a lot more.

Local tip: To see the wildflowers at their peak, you have to go at the right time, which depends on the year and the elevation.
Typically, the peak of wildflowers at Rowena Crest happens in April. Witness the amazing native lupine and balsamroot among other species.
Rowena Crest Viewpoint Hikes
There are two main hiking trails that start from the Rowena Crest Viewpoint.
These hikes are open between May 1 and October 31. They are closed during winter months due to muddy conditions which can damage the trails.
McCall Point Trail
This out-and-back trail is 5 miles total, with 1,300 feet of elevation gain. Hike to McCall Point for amazing views.

Rowena Plateau Trail
Located within the beautiful Tom McCall Nature Preserve, this semi-loop trail is just over 2 miles and has about 250 feet of elevation gain.
Keep in mind: Dogs are not allowed on these trails. Keep an eye out for poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes.
Also, bring sun protection because there is little shade. As a result of this exposure, it might be best to skip on a rainy day.

There are lots of fun places to check out near Rowena Crest Viewpoint.
Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Museum
This is one of the best museums in the Columbia River Gorge. They have great exhibits describing Native Americans in this region, the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and how floods formed the gorge as we know it today.

Memaloose State Park
This is a great state park with a campground, rest area, and hiking trails. This is a great place to camp for a multi-day stay in this area.
Hood River and White Salmon
These two iconic towns in the Columbia River Gorge have so much to offer. Explore the quaint shops, delicious breweries, and memorable restaurants. Both are with a visit, but Hood River especially.

Panorama Point
Take a few minutes to explore this underrated viewpoint that offers incredible views of Mt. Hood. Just be sure to visit on a clear day!
