Fall

Fall in Central Oregon brings cooler weather, but still lots of opportunities for outdoor activities. However, the days are shorter and the nights are chilly but day time temperatures are quite pleasant.

Winter

High Camp Taphouse

High Camp Taphouse is a Himalayan restaurant and taphouse where locals and visitors gather for a laid-back, friendly atmosphere, a fantastic local beer selection, and great food.

What started as a food truck, High Camp opened in sisters in 2022. A portion of their profits go to a good cause: helping marginalized populations in Nepal access schooling. You should read more about them!

Ski Inn Taphouse and Hotel

Nestled in the heart of Sisters, the Ski Inn Taphouse and Hotel is a combination taphouse and boutique hotel. Not only can you savor a great selection of craft beers, but you can also book a comfortable room right on the premises, making it a convenient choice for travelers.

Things to do Sisters Oregon: Outdoors

We’ll start out by exploring one of the main draws of Central Oregon: the outdoors. If there’s an outdoor activity you can think of, chances are you can do it in Central Oregon. 

From mountain biking to paddle boarding to skiing and more, there’s never a dull moment for the outdoor enthusiast in Central Oregon.

So you’re not a backcountry daredevil, no problem! There are lots of accessible ways for anyone to get their fill of nature near Sisters.

Hiking Near Sisters Oregon

There are tons of great hikes near Sisters Oregon. From a short walk near town, to multi-day adventures in the Cascade Mountains, there is a hiking trails in/near Sisters Oregon for everyone.

Smith Rock State Park

Smith Rock State Park is 40 minutes east of Sisters and one of the most popular destinations in all of Oregon. You can choose from a variety of hikes or see some great views just a short walk from the car. You can do hikes at Smith Rock State park year round.

Smith Rock is full of incredible rock formations, a variety of trails and viewpoints, and a world-renowned rock climbing location. Learn more in our full guide to Smith Rock State Park

If you drive to Smith Rock from Sisters, you will go through Redmond, which can be a great place to grab a bite to eat or a drink and stay a few hours. Learn more about restaurants in Redmond and breweries in Redmond.

Dee Wright Observatory

The Dee Wright Observatory is a volcanic marvel, offering panoramic views of the Cascade Mountains. Constructed from lava rock, it’s a short walk from the parking lot to the roof of the observatory, providing unique perspectives of the surrounding peaks and lava fields

Inside, windows in the observatory walls detail mountain names, adding an educational touch. Dog-friendly and free, it’s a geological gem celebrated for its captivating views and lunar-like landscape. A must-visit spot on the McKenzie Pass Scenic Byway.

Tam McArthur Rim Trail

Tam McArthur Rim is a stunning hike up on the east side of Broken Top and the Three Sisters providing excellent views of all four peaks and the surrounding landscape. 

The Tam McArthur Rim Trailhead starts at Three Creeks Lake and climbs up the ridge as the views improve and the trees become thin. The lake provides an excellent foreground for the mountains beyond and is a consistent feature in the visible landscape.

Overall, this is an excellent moderate hike near Sisters. It is about 5 miles long but can be extended an extra two miles or so one way to reach the icy No Name Lake, a crispy turquoise alpine lake perfect for a cold dip on a hot day.

Lakes Near Sisters Oregon

Central Oregon lakes are perfect for paddleboarding, kayaking, fishing, photography, swimming, or just enjoying the view. There are dozens of accessible lakes near Sisters to choose from. Here are some of our favorites.

Scout and Suttle Lakes

Scout Lake and Suttle Lake are the closest lakes to Sisters Oregon, around 20 minutes away, and are actually some of my favorite Central Oregon Lakes. To access both Scout and Suttle lakes take Highway 20 west for around 15 miles.

The two lakes are very close together but have extremely different offerings. Scout Lake is a perfect small family lake with shallow swimming areas and perfect picnic spots. This lake is a great place for families with small kiddos. Suttle Lake is a large lake with a lodge, boat ramps, camping areas, rentals, and lots of swimming spots.

Suttle Lake Lodge and Boathouse have great food, fun events, and options to rent paddle boards, boats and other gear.

Sparks Lake

Sparks Lake is a magical lake that is overall one of our favorite lakes in near Bend. This lake is one of the several amazing lakes on the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. As a result, the views of the surrounding mountains are spectacular, and the uniquely shaped lake has so many interesting islands, inlets, and bays to explore by paddling.

Don’t have a watercraft you can paddle? No problem! Pick your spot on one of the several beachy areas near the excellent day use area and take a dip in the cold water. The day user area is very family friendly.

If you feel like a nice walk, I highly recommend the Ray Atkeson Memorial Trail which is a beautiful and mellow hike that lets you explore lava fields and the lake. We consider Sparks Lake a must-see lake in Central Oregon if you have the time!

Three Creek Lake

Three Creek Lake is a gem in the Three Sisters Wilderness, just 30 minutes from Sisters, Oregon. This pristine alpine lake near sisters offers fantastic fishing opportunities, with stocked rainbows and feisty native browns that anglers can catch and release. 

Three Creek Lake also stands out as an excellent spot for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The surrounding area also offers campgrounds, hiking trails near sisters, and mesmerizing views of the Three Sisters peaks. 

While it may get crowded during peak tourist season, Three Creeks Lake continues to be a peaceful and picturesque lake near Sisters. Consider doing the Tam McArthur Rim Trail (mentioned above) to get great views of Three Creek Lake and the surrounding landscape.

The Cove Palisades State Park

The Cove Palisades State Park is a stunning canyon and lake located about 1 hour northeast of Sisters. A popular Central Oregon spot for camping, boating, and hiking, the park has two seasonal campgrounds, a resort, three day use areas, and several hiking trails.

The Cove Palisades State Park is an excellent day trip from Sisters, especially if you want to do some boating or hiking. We recommend the Tam-a-lau Trail for hiking, and the Cove Palisade Resort for resort activities like watercraft rentals.

Caves Near Sisters Oregon

Explore the incredible subterranean lava tubes of Central Oregon. Lava tube caves were formed thousands of years ago by fast flowing lava. Today, these caves are super fun to explore and a main attraction for visitors and locals alike.

It is important to bring several light sources and layers (the caves are always cold), and at least one caving buddy. Learn more in our full guide to caves in Central Oregon.

Skylight Cave

Skylight Cave is the closest cave to Sisters Oregon. The name describes the series of three skylights (holes) in the ceiling of the cave. 

Go during the middle of a sunny day in order to see the beams of light shining through the cave. You do have to endure a long gravel road, but in our opinion it is worth it.

Redmond Caves

The Redmond Caves are a series of five caves in Redmond Oregon. Three of them are quite large, do not require crawling, and are pitch black inside. The entire area can be explored within an hour or two.

While maybe not worth going out of your way for, consider spending some time in Redmond (grab a bite to eat or a local brew) after you explore the caves. Alternatively, check out the Redmond caves on your way to Smith Rock State Park (mentioned above).

Lava River Cave

Lava River Cave is the longest lava tube cave in all of Oregon, and as a result, the most popular cave in Central Oregon.

Located within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument, this cave is managed by the U.S. Forest Service who have implemented a reservation system designed to limit crowds.

In our opinion, this is one of the best caves near Bend, but be sure to bring a good flashlight and warm clothes if you want to walk the entire 2 miles. 

Skiing, Snowshoeing, and Sledding near Sisters Oregon

Come November, Central Oregon transforms into a winter wonderland, offering a variety of winter activities.

Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort

Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort is the largest ski resort in Central Oregon. boasts an impressive 360 degrees of skiable terrain, catering to skiers and snowboarders of all levels.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or strapping on skis for the first time, the mountain offers groomed runs, challenging glades, and pristine powder bowls, ensuring an unforgettable day on the slopes.

Hoodoo Ski Area

Hoodoo Ski Area is the closest ski resort to Sisters and has a less commercial feel than Mt. Bachelor. Of course, that also means less terrain but also cheaper lift tickets.

We love Hoodoo Ski Area and highly recommend it to skiers and snowboarders visiting Sisters. They also have some nordic ski trails and a tubing hill which make Hoodoo quite a family friendly spot to visit.

Cross Country Skiing

For those seeking a slower-paced skiing excursion, there are numerous Nordic skiing opportunities near Sisters.

Sno-parks near Sisters with cross-country ski trails include Ray Benson Sno Park, Santiam Sno Park, Three Creeks Sno Park, and Potato Hill Sno Park. There are also lots of sno-parks near Bend with ski trails.

While these sno-parks are a great way to access ski trails, keep in mind you need a Sno Park Permit for most of them.

Snowshoeing Near Sisters Oregon

You can snowshoe near Sisters at most sno-parks, but some have dedicated and marked snowshoe trails. The sno-parks that have dedicated and marked trails include Three Creeks Sno Park, Virginia Meissner Sno Park, and Swampy Lakes Sno Park.

Sledding Near Sisters Oregon

Santiam Sno Park is an ideal sledding hill near Sisters with a variety of slope steepness suitable for any level of adrenaline seeker. There are also great views of the surrounding landscape and restrooms.

Snowmobiling Near Sisters Oregon

Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity in Central Oregon, and there are lots of groomed snowmobile trails near Sisters. Refer to this map of the snowmobile trails.
